Assam and Mizoram Governments Agree to Maintain Peace and Harmony
On August 9, 2024, delegations from Assam and Mizoram met in Aizawl to discuss the ongoing border dispute between the two states. The meeting resulted in a joint statement outlining several key agreements aimed at maintaining peace and resolving the issue amicably.
Both states reaffirmed their commitment to the "Goodwill Mission" initiated in February 2024, which aims to resolve the dispute through understanding and goodwill. They agreed to continue promoting peace and harmony along the border, including regular meetings between officials and joint cultural and sports festivals.
To facilitate further discussions, officials from both states will hold a series of meetings at venues to be determined. The next ministerial-level meeting will take place in Guwahati, Assam, before March 31, 2025.
Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against the transportation of smuggled arecanut from other countries. They acknowledged the crucial role of the people living on both sides of the border in finding a peaceful solution and urged them to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
The meeting was attended by high-level officials from both states, including Assam's Minister of Border Protection and Development Department Atul Bora and Mizoram's Home Minister K Sapdanga. The joint statement reflects a positive step towards resolving the long-standing border dispute and ensuring peace and harmony between the two neighboring states.
