Bulgaria Heightens Livestock Inspections to Prevent Spread of Peste des Petits Ruminants

The Bulgarian Food Safety Authority has been actively monitoring the situation regarding the outbreaks of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) in neighboring Romania and Greece. As a precautionary measure, they have inspected 551 livestock farms, focusing on small ruminants. While the animals examined were found to be clinically healthy, the risk of contamination remains. Therefore, enhanced inspections will continue in the coming week.

Veterinarians from regional directorates have conducted thorough examinations on over 11,000 small ruminants across 220 settlements. Additionally, disinfection protocols have been implemented at all border crossing points to prevent the potential entry of the disease. The agency emphasizes the importance of adhering to regulations regarding the movement of live animals. This includes mandatory clinical examinations and PCR tests to minimize the risk of spreading PPR.

It's important to note that PPR is primarily an animal disease and does not pose a threat to human health. However, it can lead to significant economic losses for farmers, as infected animals must be culled to prevent further spread. The Bulgarian Food Safety Authority's proactive approach demonstrates their commitment to safeguarding animal health and protecting the livelihoods of those involved in livestock farming.
