Grampians Businesses Face $1.9 Million Daily Loss Due to Bushfires

The Grampians National Park has been closed since Friday evening due to a large bushfire, forcing businesses in the area to face significant losses. The fire is expected to burn for weeks during the region's peak tourist season, leading to an estimated $1.9 million daily loss for businesses.

Grampians Wimmera Mallee Tourism chief executive Marc Sleeman said Halls Gap, usually bustling at this time of year, is experiencing a major economic impact. He emphasized the urgent need for government intervention and long-term support to help the tourism industry recover.

Halls Gap Zoo manager Mark Treweek, who evacuated animals and saw cancellations through January, expressed concern about the future. He highlighted the uncertainty surrounding weather conditions and the impact it could have on tourism.

South Australian tourist Tania Ingerson, forced to evacuate her hotel on Friday, plans to return to the Grampians in the new year. She praised the community's friendliness and expressed hope for everyone's safety, including the wildlife.

Halls Gap Lakeside Tourist Park and Grampians Getaway co-owner Josephina McDonald prioritized safety, stating her preference for a full reopening when everything is safe. While her husband and son fight the fires, she focuses on ensuring the safety of their family's animals and staff.

Mr. Sleeman defended his advice to tourists earlier this week, stating that they followed the incident control center's guidance. He acknowledged the unexpected turn of events on Friday and emphasized the need for adaptable messaging.

Small Business Minister Natalie Suleyman announced small business grants in Melbourne and confirmed that the state government is considering support for the region. Federal MP Catherine King also assured that the government is working with the Victorian government to provide relief.
