Visitors Experience Touchless Fingerprint Authentication at Haneda Airport
In a groundbreaking initiative, Haneda Airport is currently conducting a verification test of a touchless fingerprint authentication system for international travelers. This innovative technology aims to streamline entry procedures and enhance security.
The experiment, which commenced on February 3rd, marks the first deployment of such equipment in Japan. The system utilizes a camera to capture a photograph of the fingertip, eliminating the need for physical contact with a sensor, unlike conventional fingerprint scanners.
This advanced technology holds the potential to prevent terrorist attacks and other criminal activities by comparing individuals' fingerprints with existing databases. However, existing touchless solutions often struggle to accurately match photographed images with previously recorded data due to fingerprint deformation caused by pressure.
To address this challenge, the test utilizes a technology developed by Panasonic Connect Co. in Tokyo. This technology predicts finger deformation levels, significantly reducing reference errors and improving accuracy.
The Immigration Services Agency plans to continue the test until the end of February to thoroughly evaluate the system's accuracy and speed. The official implementation date for the touchless fingerprint authentication system remains undetermined.
