Adani Group to stop handling container cargo from Iran, Pak, Afghanistan

AHMEDABAD, India: In order to combat drug trafficking, Adani Ports and Logistics, a subsidiary of the Adani Group, issued this week a trade advisory stating that the company will no longer handle container cargo originating from Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan on 15 November.

The advisory, which was distributed to the company's customers by Subrat Tripathy and SEZ Ltd. CEO Adani Ports, occurred almost a month after the seizure of 3,000 kilograms heroin at Mundra Port, Kutch District operated by the company. The drugs were shipped in Bandar Abbas Port in Kandahar, Afghanistan and originated in Mundra Port from Bandar Abbas port in Iran.

The contraband, imported on 11th September by the Indian Directorate of Revenue Intelligence DRI was intercepted by a Chennai-based couple as semi processed Talc stones in two 40 -foot containers.

On 21 September, Adani Group released a statement following social media outrage of the drug haul, in order to shut down motivated, malicious and false propaganda that was being run on social media against the company. The statement also congratulated the DRI Customs teams for apprehending illegal drugs and seizing the accused, adding that on 16 September 2021, a joint operation by the DRI and Customs unearthed a large cache of illegal drug from two containers from Afghanistan that had arrived in the Mundra International Container Terminal, Mundra Port. On 26 September, the Special court of Bhuj ordered special officers to investigate the role of the Authority and Officers in the Mundra Adani Port. On September 6th, the Ministry of Home Affairs transferred the case to National Investigation Agency from DRI.
