Brazil at risk of more serious attack than Jan 6, says Electoral Court chief

Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Edson Fachin speaks during a hearing on Turkey's extradition request for Brazilian-Turkish businessman Ali Sipahi in Brasilia on August 6, 2019. EVARISTO SA AFP BRASILIA - Brazil is at risk of a more serious attack than the Jan 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol, said the head of the country's Electoral Court, Edson Fachin, on Wednesday ahead of the presidential election in October.

His remarks followed the latest polls showing Brazil's far-right President Jair Bolsonaro trailing behind the former leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ahead of the elections.

Bolsonaro has cast doubts on the voting system without evidence, going as far as to threaten to reject an unfavorable outcome in the elections.

Fachin spoke at the Wilson Center in Washington on Wednesday and said that we may experience an episode even more severe than the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

Fachin has warned that he will not accept any interference in the electoral process. The involvement of Brazil's armed forces in the presidential race must be cooperative and must not be interfering, he said.

The election court created a transparency commission with representatives of several public institutions, including the military, to ensure greater security for the voting process.

Military leaders have stated that the armed forces will respect any election result. Some military officials have been echoed by Bolsonaro's comments about weaknesses in Brazil's voting system.

We will not accept this type of circumstance. Fachin said that collaboration was never, and intervention never.
