Bulgaria announces crackdown against driving under the influence of narcotics

In Bulgaria a large-scale operation is underway against driving under the influence of narcotics. The announcement was made at an extraordinary briefing by the outgoing Prime Minister Kiril Petkov. We have decided to declare war on all recidivist drivers, especially those who drive after having used drugs, said Petkov.

The crackdown on traffic crime followed Tuesday night's tragic car crash in Sofia in which two young women died. The driver, the former Levski football player Georgi Semerdjiev, who has about 50 traffic violations, fled the scene and a Sofia police officer helped him hide, but he was later arrested. Interior Minister Boyko Rashkov said Semerdjiev had had his license revoked since 2005, but had been driving various vehicles until today. A blue rotating police ligh and a baton were found in his car.

Tonight, citizens are to protest at the scene of the serious crash in Sofia.
