Italy has registered 131,031 deaths linked to COVID - 19 since its outbreak emerged in February last year, the ninth-highest toll in Europe after Britain and the second-highest in the world. The country has reported 4.68 million cases to date.

Patients in hospital with COVID - 19 - not including those in intensive care - stood at 3,991 on Sunday, down from 3,057 a day earlier.

There were 21 new admissions in intensive care units, down from 27 on Saturday. The total number of additional Intensive Care patients fell to 431 from 432 in the previous period.

Some 285,960 tests for COVID 19 were conducted in the past day compared with a predecessor of 355,896, said the health ministry.
