CVS, Rite Aid limiting purchase of Plan B pills

CVS and Rite Aid are limiting the amount of Plan B a customer can buy in order to ensure equitable access and increase demand, according to the companies in statements.

We have a large stock of Plan B and Aftera at all of our CVS Pharmacy stores and CVS.com. A temporary purchase limit of three on these products has been put in place to ensure equal access and consistent supply on store shelves, according to a statement from Ethan Slavin with CVS Health.

At this time, we are limiting purchases of Plan B contraceptive pills to three per customer due to increased demand, said Terri Hickey, director of public relations for Rite Aid. Plan B and Aftera, known as the morning-after pills, are both brand names for the drug Levonorgestrel, an emergency contraceptive.

According to the companies that make them, neither should be used as a regular birth control. Even if you've been using Levonorgestrel, women should continue taking their birth control.

The medication should be taken 72 hours after unprotected sex, but the sooner it is taken, the more effective it is.
