Mosquitoes released by NEA do not bite, says Sustainability minister

SINGAPORE: Mosquitoes released by the National Environment Agency NEA do not bite, but increase presence can be noticeable to residents, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and the Environment Baey Yam KengBaey Yam Keng on Wednesday October 5, after Wolbachia-Aedes mosquitoes were released in new areas, but the population of the wild-type Aedes aegypti mosquito falls to very low levels after a few months of releases, decreasing by up to 98 Bites from these mosquitoes are also reduced, according to Mr Baey in Parliament.

He said that dengue cases were reduced by up to 70 per cent in study sites with at least one year of releases.

Residents may still get bites from mosquitoes, as Wolbachia-Aedes technology does not affect other species of mosquitoes.
