Tasmania police urge man wanted over police shooting to give himself up

Tasmania Police have implored a man wanted over the alleged shooting of a police vehicle to give himself up, saying they believe he may have painted his car to avoid detection.

On Tuesday, police released the name and photo of 33-year-old Robert George Greig, whom they named as a person of interest in relation to shots fired at officers who were attending a call-out near New Norfolk, north of Hobart, late on Monday.

Earlier today, police issued a plea for Mr Greig to make contact with police and hand himself in. Commander Tim Dooley said police wanted to resolve the incident safely for everyone including Mr Greig.

Commander Dooley said, "Please make contact with the police so we can safely resolve the situation for you, your family and your loved ones."

The police would like to acknowledge the support and assistance of the local community as we carry out our investigations. We appreciate their patience and understanding, and we are working hard to resolve this situation as soon as we can. Holden 4WD may have some parts repainted''

The police looked for Mr Greig and a blue Holden Colorado 4WD with the registration plate YD 08 IP, and searched houses and properties around Brighton and Elderslie overnight.

Commander Dooley said that it was not possible to discount the possibility that the vehicle may have been modified with some parts painted grey with an undercoat, which is why we can't discount the possibility that it has been modified.

He said police would be targeting a number of areas including the Brighton and Elderslie region today as part of an ongoing search to locate Mr Greig Members of the public who have seen Mr Greig or the vehicle he is believed to be driving are asked not to approach him but instead call police on or report anonymously via the Crime Stoppers website.

Two police vehicles were shot dead on Monday night as they responded to an alleged family violence incident.

There was no-one injured in the incident, but the police union said up to six shots had been fired, narrowly missing officers and damaging windows on a police car.
