US says it’s not prepared to impose economic costs on Russia

Welcome back to the Guardian's live coverage of the war in Ukraine. I am Adam Fulton and here is a summary of the latest developments as it approaches 8.40 am in Kyiv.

If Russia moves ahead with Ukraine annexation, the White House said on Friday that the United States is not prepared to impose additional economic costs on Russia in conjunction with American allies. Russia is planning to annex parts of eastern Ukraine as a result of what the US has described as sham referendums.

None of China's foreign ministers has told his Ukrainian counterpart that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected. Wang Yi and Dmytro Kuleba met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York and was the first since Russia invaded Ukraine. Kuleba said Wang had reaffirmed China's respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
