Tasmania's Attorney-General Elise Archer resigns

Tasmania's Attorney-General Elise Archer has resigned from the cabinet, following a request from Prime Minister Jeremy Rockliff.

She also said she will resign from the parliament if she loses the election.

Rockliff said in a meeting this morning that he asked Ms Archer's resignation from cabinet - which she provided - after he was made aware of remarks that were unacceptable.

Archer also issued a statement saying she would resign from parliament next month.

Leaked WhatsApp messages reportedly included remarks about Mr Rockliff and former Prime Minister Peter Gutwein, as well as former cabinet minister Sarah Courtney and Ms Archer's personal staff.

Mr Rockliff said the remarks made by Ms Archer in leaked WhatsApp messages would not be accepted.

Rockliff said he would not comment on whether he will be paid or not.

As a result, Mr Archer is no longer a member of my cabinet.

The Liberal Party will likely win a recount in Clark, where he will be replaced by the Liberal Party, maintaining its current numbers in the lower house.

Archer, who chairs the House of Assembly, was the first female speaker of the Assembly and has served since 2017 in cabinet.

The Liberal Party has a problem with women, she said.

Archer added that she was disappointed to see the ministers' decision to resign.

Despite years of dedicated service, it takes immense strength and resilience to be a woman in top government positions and to strive to be treated the same as male colleagues, he said.

I am particularly proud of my achievements as the first female speaker of the House of Assembly and particularly in law reform over the last five years, he said.
