Bulgaria Marks World Cancer Day with Illuminated Palace and Virtual Dialogues

On the occasion of World Cancer Day, observed on February 4, the National Palace of Culture in Sofia will be illuminated in orange from 19:00 to 21:00 for two nights. This initiative is part of the Bulgarian Cancer Scientific Society's efforts to raise awareness about cancer and promote early detection and prevention.

The organization is also launching a series of 11 virtual dialogues titled "On Cancer straightforward." These dialogues will feature leading experts discussing pressing issues in cancer care and presenting the latest advancements in the field. The videos will be accessible on the organization's website and social media profiles.

In 2022, Bulgaria recorded 16,301 cancer-related deaths and 26,235 new diagnoses of malignant tumors. The country has one of the highest mortality rates from both preventable and treatable cancers, according to the European Commission's Health Profile of Bulgaria for the year. This concerning statistic is attributed to the lack of effective prevention and screening programs.
