As summer temperatures soar, the risk of hospital fires escalates. To address this concern, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have issued a joint advisory to all states and union territories (UTs).
The advisory emphasizes the need for thorough inspections and prompt rectification of electrical load discrepancies in all accredited hospitals. Hospitals are also required to conduct regular fire safety drills, train staff, and maintain and test fire safety equipment.
To ensure compliance, hospitals must annually renew valid fire no objection certificates (NOCs) and adhere to state fire department regulations. Strict no-smoking policies and controls on heat sources near oxygen tanks are also crucial.
Hospitals are urged to prioritize recalibration of electrical loads in older buildings to prevent electrical fires. The advisory highlights the paramount importance of patient safety and healthcare facility integrity.
State and UT administrations are tasked with conducting follow-up reviews to ensure strict implementation of these critical safety measures. By adhering to these guidelines, hospitals can mitigate the risk of fires and protect the well-being of patients and staff.
