Mitsubishi Electric Corporation unveiled its latest satellite, Daichi-4, to the media in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. This advanced satellite is equipped with cutting-edge radar technology, enabling it to observe the Earth's surface with unprecedented precision.

Daichi-4's primary mission is to detect abnormal surface changes, providing valuable information for disaster prevention and response. It will monitor volcanic activity, ground subsidence, and the extent of damage in disaster-stricken areas. The satellite's wide observation range and high-resolution data will allow for more frequent and accurate assessments.

Mitsubishi Electric developed and manufactured Daichi-4 over eight years, following an order from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The satellite weighs approximately 3 tons and has a wingspan of 20 meters when fully deployed. The total development cost, including ground facilities, is estimated at 32 billion yen ($217 million).

Daichi-4 is a significant upgrade from its predecessor, Daichi-2, which is currently in operation. It can observe a ground surface four times wider, enabling more comprehensive and timely monitoring. This enhanced capability will contribute to a safer and more resilient society by providing critical information for disaster preparedness and response.
