Tyrrell Resigns from Jacqui Lambie Network, Shakes Up Tasmanian Politics

Tasmanian Senator Tammy Tyrrell has announced her resignation from the Jacqui Lambie Network (JLN), opting to sit as an independent on the crossbench. In a statement, Tyrrell clarified that she was not dismissed from the party but had been advised by Senator Lambie to pursue her own path.

Tyrrell emphasized that her decision was not motivated by any ill will towards Lambie or the JLN, but rather a recognition that the party lacked confidence in her ability to contribute effectively. She expressed her desire for Lambie and the JLN to continue their success and stated that she would not engage in any actions that could potentially harm their progress.

Tyrrell's resignation comes after the JLN gained two seats in the recent Tasmanian state election, with the possibility of securing a third. The new members are expected to play a significant role in the balance of power within the state parliament. Notably, Tyrrell was not actively involved in the state election campaign and did not attend the party's election night function.

Senator Lambie, who was initially elected to federal parliament in 2014 as part of the Palmer United Party, has faced questions regarding the potential risks associated with having individuals elected under someone else's name. During the state election campaign, she expressed her hope and trust in having chosen the right candidates.

In the past, Tyrrell has expressed her unwavering support for Lambie, stating that they were united in their goals. However, election analyst Kevin Bonham has suggested that Tyrrell's resignation is indicative of the instability often seen within minor parties in the Senate. He anticipates that this issue may also arise within the Tasmanian parliament, given the significant power that the new Lambie members will hold.
