LDP Faces Headwinds in Shimane By-Election Amid Political Fund Scandal and Opposition Momentum

Norimasa Nishikori, a former Finance Ministry bureaucrat, intends to run for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in the upcoming Lower House by-election in the Shimane No. 1 district. However, the LDP is facing significant challenges in this traditionally strong bastion.

Nishikori has expressed frustration and anger over the political fund scandal involving LDP factions. He has emphasized the importance of handling political funds legally and called for deep reflection within the party. Despite his criticism, his campaign meeting drew a small crowd, and no questions were raised from the audience.

The by-election was prompted by the death of Hiroyuki Hosoda, the former speaker of the Lower House. Nishikori is expected to face Akiko Kamei, a former Lower House member of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP), and another candidate.

The LDP has historically dominated Shimane Prefecture, but recent events have weakened its position. Hosoda's legacy has become a liability due to allegations of sexual harassment and ties to the Unification Church. The deaths of other prominent LDP figures from the prefecture have also contributed to the party's decline.

The CDP is capitalizing on the LDP's vulnerabilities. Party leaders have visited the constituency to rally support, emphasizing the need to break free from money-driven politics. While the LDP's support rate has declined, the CDP remains far behind in the polls. However, Kamei's campaign has reported a shift in sentiment, with businesses becoming more receptive to their presence.
