Supreme Court Dissatisfied with Ramdev, Balkrishna's Apology in Misleading Ad Case

The Supreme Court expressed dissatisfaction with the apology offered by Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna in the Patanjali misleading advertisement case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that he had advised them to tender an unconditional apology, which he had received. However, the bench comprising Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah remained unconvinced.

Justice Kohli reprimanded Ramdev and Balkrishna, questioning how the affidavits they filed had reached the media before being submitted to the court. She also cautioned them against taking the contempt proceedings lightly.

In response, Ramdev and Balkrishna filed separate unconditional apologies in the Supreme Court, acknowledging their breach of the statement recorded in the November 21, 2021 order. The court had previously noted that Patanjali Ayurved's counsel had assured that there would be no violation of laws related to advertising or branding of its products, and that no casual statements claiming medicinal efficacy would be released to the media.

The violation of this assurance and the subsequent media statements angered the court, prompting it to issue notices to Ramdev and Balkrishna to show cause why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them.
