Western Australia has reported a recent case of meningococcal disease, resulting in one adult death and two hospitalizations. These are the first cases in the state since 2020.

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that can affect the blood and brain. While uncommon, it can be deadly.

The recent cases are not linked and involve adults. Two were caused by serogroup B bacteria, and one by serogroup W.

Meningococcal bacteria spread through respiratory droplets but do not survive long outside the body.

Symptoms include high fever, chills, headache, stiff neck, rash, and severe muscle and joint pain.
