A Call for Long-Term Funding and Culturally Appropriate Services

## Kimberley Aboriginal Health Service Calls for Long-Term Mental Health Funding

The Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services (KAMS) is urging for longer-term funding for mental health services in the region. The Kimberley grapples with complex mental health issues and has one of the highest youth suicide rates globally.

The need for greater mental health support was highlighted during the devastating floods in Fitzroy Crossing last year. The crisis prompted the implementation of the town's first social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) model of care.

KAMS mental health executive manager Kristen Orazi revealed an "incredible" under-servicing of the Fitzroy Valley spanning decades. She emphasized the detrimental impact of short-term funding, leading to talent loss and service disruptions.

The Mabu Liyan High Dependency unit at Broome Hospital serves as the only critical treatment facility for mental health in the region. It allows patients to remain on country, connected to their families and support networks. Deputy State Coroner Sarah Linton recommended upgrades to the unit in 2021 following the death of an Aboriginal man in 2019.

The WA Country Health Service and the state government have acknowledged the need for upgrades and committed funding. However, Ms. Orazi stresses the importance of sustainable funding models, co-commissioning, and earlier intervention with a holistic and culturally appropriate approach.

Broome Shire president Chris Mitchell highlighted the shire's proactive stance in advocating for mental health facilities, including a new sober-up shelter location and the Broome Health and Wellbeing Campus.

Mental Health Commissioner Maureen Lewis emphasized the commission's collaboration with local stakeholders to ensure services meet community needs. They are working to secure land for the Step Up Step Down mental health service in Broome.

The Kimberley's mental health challenges require a comprehensive and long-term commitment. Sustainable funding, culturally appropriate services, and collaboration between stakeholders are crucial to improving mental health outcomes in the region.
