Heatwave, Drought, and Financial Strain for Fishermen

## Lake Biwako's Ayu Catch Plummets to Record Low

The January haul of ayu sweetfish from Lake Biwako, Japan's largest lake, was a mere 3% of the average, marking the lowest catch since record-keeping began in 2009. This drastic decline is attributed to poor spawning conditions caused by the scorching heatwave experienced last summer.

The extreme heat and low rainfall resulted in decreased river water volume and a significant drop in ayu egg production. While a paradox exists with observed ayu shoals, the prefectural government is investigating the cause of the discrepancy.

The low water level in Lake Biwako has prompted the establishment of a drought management headquarters. The poor catches have led to backlogs in shipments to breeders, retailers, and restaurants, causing financial strain for fishermen.
