Buildings Sway in Taipei as 6.3 Magnitude Tremor Strikes East Coast

## Taiwan Endures Another Night of Earthquakes

Taiwan's east coast was shaken by a series of earthquakes starting Monday night and continuing into the early hours of Tuesday. The strongest tremor measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, causing buildings in the capital, Taipei, to sway.

The epicenter of the quakes was located in the largely rural eastern county of Hualien, which was also struck by a devastating 7.2-magnitude earthquake on April 3rd. This earlier quake claimed the lives of at least 14 people and has been followed by hundreds of aftershocks.

While there were no reports of casualties from the latest tremors, a hotel in Hualien that was already damaged in the April 3rd earthquake suffered further damage and is now leaning precariously.

Taiwan's location near the junction of two tectonic plates makes it particularly prone to earthquakes. In 2016, a powerful quake in southern Taiwan killed over 100 people. A 7.3-magnitude earthquake in 1999 resulted in the tragic loss of over 2,000 lives.
