Transurban Warned of Traffic Issues Before Rozelle Interchange Opened

A parliamentary inquiry revealed that Transurban, the company behind the Westconnex motorway, warned the previous NSW government about potential traffic hotspots on Victoria Road and the Anzac Bridge over a year before the Rozelle Interchange opened.

The inquiry is investigating the traffic problems caused by the interchange since its opening in November 2022. Transurban identified the hotspots in its analysis but discussions with the government at that time focused on alleviating the congestion, not structural changes.

The inquiry also questioned Transurban about redacted documents related to agreements with the government, but no information about prioritizing Westconnex traffic or compensation for reduced usage was found.

Meanwhile, the joint venture responsible for the interchange's design and construction, John Holland and CPB Contractors, denied responsibility for the design issues, stating they followed the reference design provided by Transport for NSW. They also revealed they have stopped using recycled mulch after the contamination scandal and are facing delays in reopening the parkland due to difficulties sourcing natural mulch.
