Plans for an Eco-Resort, Glamping, and Conservation Areas Announced

Great Keppel Island, once known as a party paradise in the 1980s, is set to undergo a transformation under a new master plan released by the Queensland government. The island, also known as Woppa, has faced over 15 years of uncertainty since Sydney-based developer Tower Holdings acquired the leases to the site in 2006 but subsequently closed its operations two years later.

Despite several failed attempts by various developers to revive the resort, the island has remained inactive, with its buildings left in ruins. Now, with the Queensland government collaborating with the Livingstone Shire Council, local operators, and traditional owners for over five years, a new vision for the island's future is taking shape. The master plan includes ambitious projects such as an eco-resort, glamping facilities, an access jetty, new sewage infrastructure, and enhanced cultural experiences to attract longer stays and more visitors to central Queensland.

Minister for State Development and Infrastructure Grace Grace expressed excitement about the plans for Great Keppel Island, highlighting the beauty of the island and the upcoming developments such as boardwalks and infrastructure enhancements to accommodate increased tourism. The $30 million investment by the Queensland government will play a crucial role in funding the priority actions outlined in the master plan, including the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant and improvements in maritime access to the island.
