Anti-Greyhound Racing Group Criticizes Delay in Appointing Commissioner Amid Deaths

An organization known as the Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds has voiced its unease regarding the continuous deaths of greyhounds in the racing industry in South Australia. A recent incident at the Mount Gambier race track saw a 19-month-old greyhound named Menari One sustain a fracture to its hind legs during its second race, leading to the dog being euthanized. This unfortunate event followed a similar occurrence involving another greyhound named Marty's Delight just 10 days prior, resulting in the dog being put down due to the same injury.

The Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds revealed that a total of 37 greyhounds have died in on-track incidents in Australia this year, with 11 of them occurring in April alone. Despite promises of reform from the industry, the rate of injury and death among greyhounds is still a prevalent issue according to the group's SA state director, Elle Trahair. The concerns raised by the organization are further compounded by the delay in appointing an independent inspector for greyhound racing reform by the South Australian government, a position that was recommended by an inquiry into the sport last year to enhance animal safety within the industry.
