Democratic Bulgaria Requests Resignation of National Assembly Speaker

Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB), led by Co-chairman Kiril Petkov, has taken a stand against the current National Assembly Speaker, Rosen Zhelyazkov, by submitting a formal request to Parliament for his resignation. Petkov expressed dissatisfaction with the work of GERB over the past three months and signaled their disapproval by calling for Zhelyazkov to step down, claiming he has been abusing his power and authority while allegedly favoring the political bloc GERB-DPS.

The coalition alleges that Zhelyazkov's actions, including what they describe as a violation of the procedure for the early termination of the term of office of the head of the National Health Insurance Fund, Stanimir Mihaylov, demonstrate his alignment with the interests of a particular political group rather than serving the general public. Furthermore, the request for Zhelyazkov's resignation was endorsed not only by PP-DB but also by MPs from the parliamentary group of BSP for Bulgaria, showing a concerted effort to hold the Speaker accountable for his perceived actions.

Kiril Petkov emphasized that the call for Zhelyazkov's resignation has garnered support beyond just PP-DB, with the Vazrazhdane party also expressing the desire for the National Assembly Speaker to step down. The coalition's request is set to be deliberated in the plenary hall today, indicating a critical moment in the ongoing political dynamics within the Bulgarian Parliament.
