Australian Antarctic Division and Department of Defence Plan Airdrop of Supplies to Remote Station

The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is currently in talks with the Department of Defence to explore the possibility of executing an airdrop operation to provide necessary provisions to expeditioners stationed in a remote area on the frozen continent. The plan is a response to challenges faced during the recent resupply mission of Australia's icebreaker, RSV Nuyina, to Mawson Station, where only half of the intended cargo was successfully unloaded due to unfavorable weather conditions and crane malfunctions as disclosed by the ABC earlier.

During a Senate inquiry held in Hobart, AAD boss Emma Campbell expressed optimism about the discussions with the Department of Defence regarding the potential airdrop operation to Mawson. The focus is on addressing the need for additional supplies, such as building materials, dry goods, and even coffee, to enhance the quality of life for expeditioners. While some essential items were delivered last month, a significant portion of cargo remains onboard the vessel, prompting the consideration of alternative methods like airdrop to ensure adequate provisions reach the station.
