A Review of Newborn Removal Practices

South Australia's child protection system is facing intense scrutiny following whistleblower claims of "inhumane" practices involving the removal of newborn babies from their mothers at public birthing hospitals. These allegations, including the separation of infants from mothers before removal notices are served, have prompted Child Protection Minister Katrine Hildyard to order a comprehensive review.

The review will investigate claims that child protection workers enter delivery rooms to issue removal notices, potentially violating SA Health policy. It will also focus on cases involving babies under one month old, with a particular focus on Aboriginal families.

The review comes amidst concerning statistics. Last year, 105 babies under one month were removed from their mothers, with a disproportionate number being Aboriginal. These removals often occur after "unborn child concerns" are filed, raising questions about the system's reliance on subjective assessments.

The review is a crucial step towards ensuring the well-being of vulnerable children and families. It must be conducted thoroughly and transparently, considering the voices of all stakeholders to create a more equitable and effective child protection system.
