Teenager Killed After Stabbing, Online Radicalization Suspected

16-Year-Old Killed After Stabbing

On Saturday night, a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed by police in Perth after stabbing a man with a kitchen knife. The incident occurred in the car park of a Bunnings store in Willetton, a suburb in Perth's southern suburbs.

Police received an emergency call just after 10pm from the teenager, who stated his intention to commit acts of violence. A second call was made shortly after, reporting the stabbing.

Upon arrival, officers encountered the teenager armed with a large kitchen knife. He lunged at them with the knife, prompting one officer to fire a single shot, fatally wounding him. The teenager later died in hospital.

The victim of the stabbing, a man in his 30s, is recovering in hospital with a serious but stable condition. He sustained a stab wound to the back that may have punctured a lung.

Possible Radicalization and Ongoing Investigation

Police Commissioner Col Blanch stated that the teenager was known to police and was part of a program designed to help individuals at risk of being radicalized. He was described as exhibiting concerning ideologies but not committing any crimes.

While the incident is not currently being labeled as a terrorist attack, authorities are investigating the possibility of online radicalization as a motivating factor.

Community Response and Support

The Imam of Perth's Nasir Mosque condemned the attack and emphasized that Islam does not condone violence. He also commended the local Muslim community for contacting police beforehand and praised the police department for their swift response.

An urgent meeting of community faith leaders and authorities was held on Sunday afternoon to discuss the incident and provide support to the affected communities.

Support for Students and Family

The principal of the high school the teenager attended released a statement expressing condolences and offering support to students, staff, and the boy's family. Support staff will be available to assist those impacted by the incident.

Ongoing Investigation and Information

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. More information about the teenager's motivations and any potential online influences is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
