Australia to Invest Billions in Upgrading Northern Defence Bases

The Australian government is set to invest between $14 billion and $18 billion in upgrading and strengthening defence bases across the country's north. This significant investment comes as the Australian Defence Force (ADF) shifts its focus towards addressing security threats in the Indo-Pacific region.

The announcement was made by Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy at a defence industry convention in Darwin. This follows last month's commitment of $50 billion in federal defence spending.

Mr. Conroy emphasized the positive impact this funding will have on local businesses and job creation. He also highlighted the importance of "hardening and developing" bases in the Northern Territory, along with other installations in northern Western Australia and North Queensland.

This investment aligns with the recommendations outlined in the Defence Strategic Review released in April 2022. The review emphasized the need for the ADF to adapt its strategy to address emerging threats, including the increasing reliance on missiles and long-range capabilities.

Recognizing the current strategic environment as the "most challenging since World War II," Mr. Conroy announced that $750 million would be allocated in the upcoming federal budget for strengthening northern bases.

This funding will support various projects, including the deployment of surveillance aircraft at RAAF Tindal near Katherine and the acquisition and training of crew for new amphibious landing craft stationed in Darwin.

The government has long promised that increased investment in defence bases would bring economic development and opportunities to the Northern Territory. However, recent statistics indicate that residents are leaving the territory for other states, prompting discussions on how to revitalize the region's development.

Mr. Conroy assured that this latest funding package would prioritize contracts with local companies, generating thousands of jobs. He emphasized the positive impact this will have on both the economy and Australia's security.

The Defence Industry Minister stated that the defence sector currently contributes 7.5% to the territory's economy, and this share is expected to grow in the coming years. He also confirmed that the "lion's share" of the $18 billion allocated for northern Australia would be directed towards the Northern Territory, with other jurisdictions receiving a smaller portion.

NT Chief Minister Eva Lawler welcomed the funding announcement, stating that it would contribute to development in areas like Darwin and Palmerston. She also mentioned plans to open new housing subdivisions and infrastructure projects to accommodate the anticipated influx of workers and projects associated with the defence investment.
