Tesla Recalls 1.7 Million Vehicles in China Due to Front Trunk Concerns

The American electric vehicle giant, Tesla Inc. (TSLA), is recalling 1.7 million vehicles in China due to concerns that the front trunk may open while driving. This could obstruct the driver's view and increase the risk of a crash, according to China's market regulator.

The recall affects certain imported Model S and X vehicles, as well as some Model 3 and Y vehicles produced in China. The issue stems from the hood latch assembly potentially failing to detect that the front trunk is unlocked after the customer opens it. This could lead to the trunk unexpectedly opening while the car is in motion, posing a safety hazard.

To address this issue, Tesla will issue an over-the-air software update that will enable the vehicle to identify if the front trunk is locked and issue warnings if it is not. This is similar to the approach the company took in the U.S. in July, where it recalled over 1.8 million vehicles for the same concern.

This is not the first recall for Tesla in China this year. In June, the company recalled nearly 6,000 vehicles due to a lack of seat belt warnings. These recalls highlight the importance of continuous monitoring and improvement of safety features in vehicles, especially as technology evolves and new potential risks emerge.
