New Railway Lines Approved to Enhance Connectivity and Boost Economic Growth

The Union Cabinet has approved eight new railway line projects, aiming to improve connectivity, facilitate ease of travel, minimize logistics costs, and contribute to the overall development of the nation. These projects, with an estimated cost of Rs 24,657 crore, are expected to be completed by 2030-31.

Spanning across seven states – Odisha, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana, and West Bengal – these new lines will cover 14 districts and add 900 km to the existing Indian Railway network. This expansion will not only enhance connectivity but also create new opportunities for employment and self-employment in the region.

The projects are aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a self-reliant India, empowering the people and driving comprehensive development in the region. They will improve logistical efficiency by connecting previously unconnected areas and enhancing transportation networks, leading to streamlined supply chains and accelerated economic growth.

These new lines will bring 64 new stations, providing better connectivity to six aspirational districts, approximately 510 villages, and a population of around 40 lakhs. Additionally, the Ajanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will be connected to the Indian Railway network, facilitating access for a large number of tourists.

The projects will also play a crucial role in the transportation of essential commodities like agricultural products, fertilizers, coal, iron ore, steel, and more. The capacity augmentation is expected to generate an additional freight traffic of 143 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum).

As a clean and energy-efficient mode of transportation, the railways will contribute to achieving climate goals and minimizing logistics costs. This will also lead to a reduction in oil imports (32.20 Crore Litres) and lower CO2 emissions (0.87 Million Tonnes), equivalent to planting 3.5 crore trees.

The railway ministry is committed to achieving complete electrification of its network by July 2024 and aims to lay a minimum of 2,000 km of new tracks. Additionally, the ministry plans to introduce new Vande Bharat trains, further enhancing the travel experience for passengers.

The government's continued investment in the railway sector, with a total allocation of Rs 2,52,200 crore in the FY25 budget, demonstrates its commitment to developing a robust and efficient transportation network that will drive economic growth and improve the lives of millions of Indians.
