Bulgaria to Nominate New European Commissioner Soon

In the city of Burgas, Iliana Ivanova, the current Bulgarian European Commissioner for various important sectors including Innovation, Scientific Research, Culture, Education, and Youth, revealed that Bulgaria is preparing to nominate a new representative for the European Commission shortly. One of the key points raised by Ivanova is President Ursula von der Leyen's suggestion that if new candidates are put forward, they should consist of both a man and a woman. However, if the current commissioner continues, then only one individual may be proposed for the position. This illustrates a move towards gender balance in the representation within the European Commission.

The deadline set for Bulgaria to present its nomination for the European Commission post is approaching fast, with August 30 being the crucial date for submission. Ivanova mentioned that while discussions were ongoing regarding the nomination, the final decision lies with the national governments. She emphasized the significance of the portfolio she currently holds, highlighting its crucial importance. Additionally, MEP Tsvetelina Penkova, who recently made history as the first female president of the European Energy Forum, suggested that influential European countries were showing support for Bulgaria to have a commissioner in a vital area like energy. This potentially signifies a shift towards recognizing and supporting Bulgaria's role in key sectors within the European Union.
