Cost Concerns and Resident Complaints
Victoria's Premier, Jacinta Allan, has defended the cost estimates for the first stage of the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) project, despite concerns raised by the federal government and Infrastructure Australia.
The first stage of the 90-kilometer orbital rail tunnel, known as SRL East, is currently underway and will connect the suburbs of Box Hill and Cheltenham. The project is expected to cost up to $34.5 billion.
However, a report from Infrastructure Australia has questioned the viability of the project, warning that it is expected to exceed its budget and lacks a detailed business case. The report also raised concerns that the cost-benefit analysis of the first stage relies on future stages to justify its benefits.
The federal government has asked the Victorian government for answers regarding the report, and Shadow Minister for Major Projects Evan Mulholland has expressed concern that the federal government has not yet committed to funding beyond an initial investment of $2.2 billion.
In response, Premier Allan has stated that her government will continue to work with both the federal government and Infrastructure Australia. She has also defended the project's cost estimates, stating that the first three projects awarded have all been within the budget.
Meanwhile, residents near construction works have reported experiencing symptoms associated with the use of heavy machinery. Michelle Hornstein, a resident of Heatherton, described feeling "a little bit woozy" and experiencing motion sickness while working from home. She believes the symptoms were caused by vibration rollers used for ground compaction works.
The Suburban Rail Loop Authority has acknowledged the concerns of residents and stated that they are working closely with them to reduce the impact of construction works. They have also confirmed that the vibration rollers have been taken offsite and are no longer in use.
Premier Allan has acknowledged the experiences of the residents and stated that "a lot of work" has been done with those affected. She has also emphasized the importance of investing in transport infrastructure projects to support the growing population of Melbourne.
