Australian man who was shot by police seeks to have charges withdrawn

Lawyers for the man charged with assaulting police officers who shot him six times in Palmerston, outside Darwin earlier this year, are trying to have the charges against him withdrawn.

The defence team said an internal police investigation into the shooting had been withheld despite lawyers being told that no such investigation had been carried out.

Peter Skeen, 20, was left in a critical condition after shooting in the Palmerston suburb of Gray in March.

Police said Mr. Skeen had armed himself with a spear and tried to throw it at officers when the shots were fired.

An internal critical incident investigation was immediately launched after the shooting, according to Assistant Commissioner Michael White at the time.

Mr. Skeen's defence lawyer, Clancy Dane, told the Darwin Local CourtDarwin Local Court on Monday that he had been told no internal investigation was conducted.

He said the Crown was seeking time to investigate the situation, which was confirmed by prosecutors, despite the fact that he had received information suggesting an investigation was carried out.

He told the court he had put a case to the prosecutors to have all the charges against Mr Skeen withdrawn.

At the moment, the Crown is considering that, but it's doing further investigation into whether an internal investigation was carried out by the prosecutor Lee Campbell.

The other charges against Mr. Skeen are assaulting police and going armed in public.

After a months-long stay, Skeen was discharged from the hospital to continue his rehabilitation.

The NT Police does not comment on matters that are still before the court. The Office of Public Prosecutions has been contacted for comment.

The case is due to be brought to court at the end of October.
