Boris Johnson still prime minister despite ministers resign

Boris Johnson is still prime minister. For weeks, many Tories have been urging the cabinet to put in place a coup against him, and force him out. Yesterday was a minimalist version of that, but Johnson saw them off and now he remains head of a government that appears fatally weakened, bereft of credibility and much smaller than usual because of all the ministers who have resigned.

Two cabinet ministers resigned on Tuesday night by Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid, a third was sacked Michael Gove and a fourth resigned Simon Hart, and within the last few minutes a fifth has gone - Brandon Lewis, Northern Ireland secretary. Lewis said in his resignation letter that Johnson's government was now past the point of no return This morning another junior minister has resigned. In her letter explaining why she left her post as Treasury Minister, Helen Whately said there were only so many times that the PM could apologise for something that went wrong and hope to move on.

The resignation of Lewis means 22 ministers have left the government. Many PPSs have quit, but they are less important. It is not certain whether the government can function with some of the jobs left vacant. Johnson may be in office until next week, when it seems certain that the Conservatives backbencher 1922 Committee will change the rules to allow another no confidence vote in Johnson, which he would lose.

We will be covering all the developments here, but it is anyone's guess what will happen today.
