California’s Pescadero Estate, a sprawling 84-acre compound, takes up residence

It took five years to obtain permits for the construction of the Pescadero Estate, a sprawling 84 acre compound on California's San Mateo County coast, according to listing agent Patrick Ryan.

There have been very few new builds in the coastal zone in the past few decades, according to the California Coastal Commission. Mr. Ryan said that newer estates with significant useable acreage were particularly important.

The home was designed by the internationally renowned architect Stan Field, of Field Architecture, who is known for his modern designs that are sensitive to the surrounding environment.

The design of Pescadero Estate, completed in 2001, incorporates passive solar energy, a butterfly roof for seismic support and an unusual barrel pantry, while its floor-to- ceiling windows take in stunning ocean views and vignettes of the estate's beautiful landscaping.

The idyllic and private estate is situated among organic farms, local trails and beaches, and several majestic state parks, and benefits from easy access to Silicon Valley and Bay Area airports.

The scale, seclusion, and self-sufficiency of this estate in a natural setting, within reach of all modern amenities and international travel, makes this a unique offering, Mr. Ryan said.

The home's 5,832 square feet has five bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms. A 700-square-foot guest house has one bedroom and one bathroom. The home is situated on a sprawling 84-acre estate.

The spacious estate is ideal for entertaining, with an abundance of parking and outdoor living space, and a one-bedroom guest house. There is a four-car garage as well as a 6,936 square-foot motor court, with 2,477 square feet of patios.

The gated estate is served by four water tanks that hold 20,000 gallons of water, a whole-home backup generator and a significant audio-visual and security system. There is enough land for buyers to put in a swimming pool, sports court or equine facilities, according to Mr. Ryan.

Pescadero Estate is situated on the dramatic northern California coastline, midway between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz, and is located just minutes from the Big Basin Redwoods, A o Nuevo and Butano State Parks. Pescadero Marsh wildlife refuge is also nearby, as well as several beaches and extensive rural roads and trails for biking and hiking in the Santa Cruz Mountains, according to Mr. Ryan. Pigeon Point Lighthouse, one of the tallest lighthouses in America, is a 10 minute drive from the property.

The charming town of Pescadero is part of San Mateo County's rural farming and ranching community. The picturesque main street of Downtown Pescadero is filled with historic New England architecture dating from the 19th century, showcasing the town's boutique retail and dining offerings.

The home is situated within a half hour of San Francisco International Airport, Silicon Valley and the non-commercial Half Moon Bay Airport, which can accommodate personal jets, according to Mr. Ryan.
