COVID 19 heading for endemic stage: AIIMS expert

New Delhi India January 23, ANI A senior epidemiologist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences AIIMS in Delhi said SARS-CoV-2 which is commonly known as COVID 19 is heading for an endemic stage.

Endimic cases are confined to a specific geographical location and the cases are often present in low numbers in that specific area.

We can say that very soon, the majority of us will be getting an infection because of the COVID 19 vaccine status and the natural infection. And then the virus will convert into the endemic virus, Dr Sanjay Rai told ANI.

The senior epidemiologist at the AIIMS said those who recovered from COVID are the best protected people, based on the scientific evidence followed by the vaccinated persons.

COVID 19 is a RNA virus that has mutated thousands of times. The variant of concern is only five like alpha, beta, Gamma delta and currently Omicron, which is a very fast transmitting disease. The health expert said that very fast transmission is taking place all over the world.

The overall severity is less and the majority of people will get this infection. According to the current scientific evidence, we can see that those who recovered from the COVID are the best-protected person and the second-best protective person is those who had the vaccine, he added.

Dr Rai said that the spread of Omicrons is mainly in metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai because of the population density, although the progress of the virus is slow in rural areas and eastern part of India.

The INSACOG has said in its latest bulletin that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 is in the community transmission stage in India and has become dominant in multiple metros where new cases have been rising exponentially.
