Mental Health Australia Chair Resigns, Citing Government Inaction

Matt Berriman, Chair of Mental Health Australia, has resigned from his position, criticizing the Albanese government's "inaction" on mental health.

Berriman, appointed in December 2021 and reappointed late last year, expressed disappointment with the government's lack of progress in addressing mental health issues. He highlighted inadequate funding, inefficient spending, and insufficient attention to the sector.

"I don't think over the last 20 years mental health has been addressed in this country," Berriman stated. "The Labor government promised that was going to happen and it hasn't."

He pointed to the significant funding allocated to defense and the NDIS, arguing that mental health deserves similar priority given its widespread impact on millions of Australians.

Despite his criticism, Berriman acknowledged the genuine concern for mental health demonstrated by Health Minister Mark Butler and Shadow Health Minister Anne Ruston. He also expressed regret over not having secured a meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during his tenure.

Senator Ruston condemned the government's neglect of mental health, stating that it was "disgraceful" and a key factor in Berriman's resignation. She emphasized the importance of treating mental health issues with the same seriousness as physical ailments.

In response, Minister Butler thanked Berriman for his contributions and reaffirmed the government's commitment to collaborating with the sector and ensuring access to mental health support for all Australians.

Berriman concluded by warning major parties that neglecting mental health could lead to voter dissatisfaction in the upcoming election.

Mental Health Australia will announce the new Chair of the Board shortly.
