Downing Street said that while current statistics were generally in line with modelled earlier this year by scientists, they were constantly assessing the situation.

Last month Mr Johnson unveiled his plan B to manage the pandemic if a rise in cases and hospitalisations risks overwhelming the NHS.

The backup plan included reintroducing Coronavirus rules such as face masks in indoor settings.

Johnson is under increasing pressure to reimpose rules to combat the spread of the virus.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman said: We clearly keep a very close watch on the latest statistics and we knew the coming months would be challenging.
