Singapore reports 35 pc rise in daily COVID cases

The ministry of health MOH said on Friday that Singapore had increased its COVID daily cases by 35 per cent to 40 per cent, a rise in COVID 19 daily cases, with the ministry saying that the increase in cases has led to more severe diseases.

It added that there was no significant impact on Singapore's healthcare system due to the higher number of daily infections.

MOH said the Omicron variant BA. Nearly a quarter of the daily infections were caused by 2.75 or Centaurus.

2.75 is a sublinear strain of the Omicron subvariant BA. It was responsible for 2 outbreaks in places like the United States and Hong Kong earlier this year.

The 2.75 variant has been around for a long time and detected in many countries, including Australia, China, Europe, India, Malaysia and the US, said MOH on Friday.

Singapore reported its first two imported cases of the variant in July.

Social mixing and gatherings and the relaxation of masking rules are some of the reasons why it is circulating more widely in our population. MOH said this is the main reason for the increase in cases.

There has been no evidence of an increased disease severity associated with BA. In our local context, 2.75 is in international literature. MOH expects to see higher numbers of cases over the next few weeks and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
