20th National Congress to mark new milestone for China, says Russian diplomat

In an exclusive interview with China Daily, Russia s consul general in Hong Kong said the upcoming 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China will mark a new milestone for China and set the country's development for the next five years.

Igor I Sagitov said that the international community is looking forward to hearing about China's foreign policy guidelines and key benchmarks of its socioeconomic development.

The top Russian diplomat in the special administrative region said that the meeting is expected to focus on livelihood issues such as rural development, urbanization, ecology, and food-security issues. He expected strong messages on national security issues to be delivered.

He said that the key points will be undoubtedly related to the one country, two systems policy in the context of the discussions on its implementation for the Hong Kong and Macao SARs.

Sagitov said that the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit, which was held in mid-September, once again proved that China and Russia are very good economic partners. He said that both sides and the summit participants expressed their willingness to continue to develop economic cooperation, not only on a bilateral basis but also on a multilateral basis.

He said the Russian media paid great attention to the speech of Chinese President Xi Jinping at the event, highlighting his call to prevent external forces from provoking color revolutions. He said that Xi's remarks and presence are a good friend of our country. Our countries' views on most global and regional issues are very similar or even identical, Sagitov said.

He said that much attention was paid to Xi's proposal to increase the share of the two countries' national currencies in mutual settlements and to make more work on the creation of a cross-border payments system in national currencies.

Economic cooperation between Moscow and Beijing is on the rise, according to Sagitov. The leaders of the two countries set a goal of increasing trade turnover to $200 billion, and believe that this goal will be achieved soon, he said.
