Nitin Gadkari Announces Introduction of Satellite-Based Toll Collection System

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari revealed plans to revolutionize the toll collection system by introducing a satellite-based method that would calculate charges based on the total distance traveled. This innovation aims to streamline the process, save time for travelers, and reduce fuel consumption by directly deducting payments from individuals' bank accounts.

Highlighting the significance of highways in minimizing travel time and fuel usage, Gadkari emphasized the need for an efficient toll collection system. He exemplified the success of reduced travel time from Mumbai to Pune, leading to substantial fuel savings, which justified the implementation of toll charges.

Looking ahead to 2024, Gadkari expressed his ambitious goal of transforming India's national highway network to match the standards of the United States. He outlined plans for Bharatmala-2, an 8500 km project, following the completion of Bharatmala 1's 34,000 km to further enhance the country's infrastructure and support economic growth to achieve the target of a five trillion-dollar economy. Additionally, he acknowledged the challenges in road safety and accidents, stressing the importance of behavioral changes and awareness initiatives to address these issues effectively.
