QR Code Revolutionizes Subway Safety in Tokyo, Slashing Costs and Enhancing Passenger Protection

Seiji Okamoto, faced with the challenge of implementing a cost-effective safety solution for a Tokyo subway line, recalled a QR code reader system he had encountered. This sparked an idea that would revolutionize the project.

Okamoto approached Denso Wave Inc., a company specializing in QR codes. Together, they developed a system that utilized QR codes to operate platform gates. This eliminated the need for a costly radio system, which would have required significant investment from multiple train operators.

The system involved installing QR codes on train doors and using cameras to scan them upon arrival at stations. This allowed for precise synchronization between train doors and platform gates, ensuring passenger safety.

The QR code system proved highly effective, with a success rate of over 99.9%. It also significantly reduced costs, with the installation of QR code stickers on train doors costing only 2.7 million yen compared to the estimated 2 billion yen for a radio system.

The success of the QR code system led to its adoption by other railroad companies, including Odakyu Electric Railway Co. Okamoto's innovation not only improved safety but also demonstrated the versatility and cost-effectiveness of QR code technology in transportation applications.
