Radev Consults on Caretaker PM Amidst Opposition and Bank Governor's Refusal

President Rumen Radev has initiated consultations with potential candidates for the role of caretaker prime minister. Under recent constitutional amendments, the President's selection is limited to a list of 10 individuals.

These candidates include the Speaker of the National Assembly, Rosen Zhelyazkov, and the Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, Dimitar Radev. However, Radev has expressed his reluctance to participate in the political process, citing potential conflicts with European legislation and the need to maintain the bank's independence.

Radev's decision effectively reduces the number of candidates by four. The President has also met with Zhelyazkov and the Chairman of the National Audit Office, Dimitar Glavchev, but neither provided statements to the media.

Prior to these meetings, GERB leader Boyko Borisov declared that he would oppose the appointment of either Zhelyazkov or Glavchev as caretaker prime minister. The President's consultations will continue tomorrow as he seeks to identify a suitable candidate.
