## Japan and the United States to Strengthen Cooperation in Advanced Technology

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and U.S. President Joe Biden are set to meet in Washington on April 10, 2023, to discuss strengthening cooperation in advanced technology. A draft joint statement outlines plans for closer collaboration in areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and quantum technology.

The statement emphasizes the importance of the bilateral relationship as a "global partnership" and highlights the two nations' commitment to leading the world in these fields. They plan to establish a framework for AI research and development in collaboration with major companies and universities from both countries. Discussions are ongoing regarding a potential $100 million investment in AI cooperation.

Beyond technology, the two leaders will also address energy and climate change issues. They plan to collaborate on offshore wind power generation and participate in technological development projects led by the U.S. Energy Department.

In the realm of defense, Kishida and Biden will focus on strengthening command and control coordination between the Self-Defense Forces and the U.S. military. They will also discuss the possibility of allowing Japanese companies to handle major repair work for U.S. Navy ships operating in the region.

The joint statement will also address China's actions in the East and South China seas, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Following the meeting, Kishida plans to visit a Toyota Motor Corp. fuel cell factory construction site in North Carolina, demonstrating Japan's commitment to creating jobs in the United States.

While the Kishida administration seeks to strengthen ties with the Biden administration, it also acknowledges the possibility of former President Donald Trump returning to office in the November election and is preparing accordingly.
