Smart Ticketing Sails onto Brisbane Ferries, Offering Tap-and-Go Convenience for Commuters

## Smart Ticketing Arrives on Brisbane Ferries

Brisbane commuters can now enjoy the convenience of smart ticketing on ferries, marking a significant milestone in the rollout of the new payment system. The technology allows passengers to tap on and off using a debit card, credit card, or smart device, offering an alternative to traditional go cards.

While smart ticketing is already available on trains and trams in South-East Queensland, its implementation on ferries was initially delayed. The system will initially only apply to full-paying adult fares, with concession passengers encouraged to continue using their go cards.

Transport Minister Bart Mellish expressed excitement about the expansion of smart ticketing, highlighting its ease of use and convenience. He compared it to paying for a coffee with tap-and-go, offering a similar experience for ferry passengers.

## A Phased Rollout

The journey towards smart ticketing began in late 2020 with its introduction on the Gold Coast light rail. A staged rollout on trains commenced in mid-2022, resulting in over 13 million trips taken using the new technology.

While the government initially aimed to have smart ticketing operational on buses and ferries by 2023, the timeline was not met. However, all buses now have the technology installed, with trials set to begin operator by operator later this year.

Acting head of Translink, Pete Milward, expressed gratitude for customers' patience as the system is deployed across the region. He highlighted the significant number of trips taken on public transport in South-East Queensland, emphasizing the importance of a convenient and efficient payment system.

Adult commuters who prefer using go cards can continue to do so on all ferry, train, and tram services. The introduction of smart ticketing on ferries represents a significant step towards a more modern and accessible public transport system in Brisbane.
