Andhra Pradesh Government Advisors Subjected to Model Code of Conduct for Fair Elections

## Andhra Pradesh Government Advisors Subjected to Model Code of Conduct

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken a significant step in ensuring a level playing field for the upcoming Andhra Pradesh Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. In a recent directive, the ECI has mandated that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) will be applicable to the private advisors of the state government. This decision comes in response to numerous complaints regarding the conduct of these advisors, who were allegedly engaging in political campaigning and criticizing opposition parties.

The ECI's directive clarifies that the advisors, despite being appointed through executive orders, hold a position equivalent to Cabinet Ministers and receive compensation from the state government's consolidated fund. This places them within the purview of the MCC, which aims to ensure free and fair elections by regulating the conduct of political parties and individuals associated with them.

The ECI has explicitly prohibited the advisors from engaging in any form of political campaigning or criticizing opposition parties. Additionally, they are barred from using their official position to influence the outcome of the elections. Any violation of these directives will be met with stern action, including potential legal consequences.

This decision by the ECI is a crucial step towards ensuring a fair and impartial electoral process in Andhra Pradesh. By bringing the advisors under the ambit of the MCC, the ECI aims to prevent any misuse of their official position and influence for political gains. This will contribute to a more level playing field for all political parties and candidates, ultimately benefiting the democratic process.

The upcoming elections in Andhra Pradesh are scheduled to be held on May 13, with the counting of votes taking place on June 4. The state assembly comprises 175 seats, while it sends 25 representatives to the Lok Sabha. The 2019 elections saw a landslide victory for the YSRCP, securing 151 assembly seats and 22 Lok Sabha seats. The TDP, the main opposition party, was relegated to 23 assembly seats and 3 Lok Sabha seats. With the MCC now applicable to the government advisors, the upcoming elections are expected to be even more closely contested, with all parties vying for a decisive victory.
