Election Commission Addresses Allegations of Misusing Probe Agencies by Government

The Election Commission recently addressed concerns raised by opposition parties regarding the alleged misuse of probe agencies by the government to target its leaders. Amid allegations of unfair practices during campaigns, the Commission clarified its commitment to ensuring a fair and level playing field for all political parties and candidates. It emphasized that while it upholds this commitment, it refrains from taking actions that could interfere with the ongoing legal judicial processes associated with criminal investigations.

In response to the accusations and concerns brought forward by political parties within the INDIA bloc, the Election Commission acknowledged the gravity of the situation. Various parties had approached the poll panel to voice their grievances about the government's purportedly using probe agencies to target their leaders. The Commission stated that it bases its decisions on constitutional principles and takes into account the complexities of "live situations" involving political figures that are under active judicial consideration and court orders resulting from criminal investigations.

The recent arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged case of money laundering linked to the excise policy brought renewed attention to the allegations of government interference in targeting opposition leaders. This development prompted the opposition to launch a vigorous criticism of the government, accusing it of attempting to stifle dissent and opposition voices, particularly during the crucial election season.
